July 20, 2005
According to a survey by Gartner, cellphone sales will reach 1.04
billion in 2009. With 674 million sold in 2004 and expected 779
million this year, the trend is obvious. In fact, the mobile phone
is "the most prolific consumer device on the planet". By comparison,
this year around 200 million PCs are expected to sell.
China and India will be increasingly important, with projected 200
million units in 2007.
The average price per cellphone will be $161 in 2009, down from $174
in 2004. This is a still good deal considering that by then the
extra phone features will be better.
For the manufacturers, profit margins will fall. As a result many of
the smaller companies will go out of business. Already, Siemens and
Alcatel are out. In contrast, the winners will include LG Electronics
and Sony Ericsson. [archive]
