According to the recent census report, the poverty rate rose to 12.7% in 2004. This was the
fourth consecutive year of poverty rising in the USA. Also, another 800,000 people were
added to total 45.8 million without health insurance.
Looking at the difficult numbers in real terms, an additional 1.1 million Americans dropped
to the poverty level in 2004 – that was over 3000 people per day. The poor totaled about 37
million by the end of 2004, most of whom were without health coverage.
Census officials are claiming the nation was still hurting from the 2001 recession and
the September 11 terror attacks.
There are some good news however. The percentage of senior citizens in poverty dropped
to 9.8%. The children saw an unchanged poverty rate of 11.2%.
The main contributors to the high poverty percentage were working adults. Some of them lost
jobs, others were forced to settle for less pay.
Another notable statistic is the median household income, which virtually stayed the same at
$44,389. The wealthiest county was Fairfax County where the median household income was
$88,133. The median is the point where exactly half earn more and half earn less. [archive]
