England's Oxford will soon be the testing ground of a new revolutionary technology: mobile tv. As many as 400 users of
the O2 network will be given Nokia 7710 smartphones to watch channels such as BBC and of course make calls.
The mobile phones will be equipped with DVB-H (digital video broadcasting - handheld) technology. With people already
downloading short clips onto their phones, the news and sports seem to be the next logical step. However, many are quite
skeptical of the technology. "I don't believe in the idea of looking at a phone monitor for 30 minutes," said
Bruno Maglione, president of the film company Marvel Enterprises.
There are factors that could make this a big success. One is there is a convenient billing system already in place.
Another is that people are used to the idea of doing more with their phones than just calling. Mobile games are an
excellent example and indicator that users may watch tv not only for the news, but to pass time as well.
The tests will be used to guide the next move. If the results are disappointing, the project could be scrapped. If not
then the technology will be here as soon as early next year. [archive]
