More online ads for jobs in KC metro area
Mar 4, 2008 A review of 31,000 online job ads posted for the Kansas City area labor market in February showed that about one-fourth of them were new ads. The growth may reflect more job opportunities, or it may indicate the continued movement to Web-based job postings by employers. The report from the Conference Board said about 11.5 percent more online job vacancies were posted for the Kansas City market last month than in February a year earlier. A more complete analysis of the area?s labor market health came by looking at the most recent unemployment numbers available for the metro area. In December, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said Kansas City had about 53,000 unemployed job hunters. At that time, Conference Board research found about 29,600 online job postings, for a supply/demand rate of 1.79. (The supply/demand rate is the number of unemployed divided by the number of ads of that month.) In vibrant job markets, such as Washington, D.C., Salt Lake City and Denver, the number of ads outpaced the number of unemployed, for supply/demand rates under 1. Other Conference Board findings specific to the Kansas City area for January produced average hourly wage figures as posted on advertised jobs in different sectors: - Sales and office work: $15.85 - Construction and maintenance: $20.12 - Production and transportation: $14.74 - Management, business and financial: $35.26 - Professional: $25.92 - Service: $10.55 For the nation as whole, the research organization said, job vacancies posted online grew 17 percent in February over January postings and were 3 percent higher than in February 2007. The research organization?s proprietary index indicated 2.6 advertised job openings were posted online for every 100 persons in the U.S. labor force last month. [archive] Featured
