Microsoft is on the verge of introducing a flash-based version of its flagship digital music player Zune. Beta News reports that the new player will be launched at Redmond and that both Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and Design and Development chief J Allard will be present on the occasion.
The Zune has had modest success since its launch. It has managed to grab 10 percent of the HDD market, but is just cornering 3 percent of the overall digital player market. However Microsoft has met its target of selling 1 million Zune units by June this year.
Hence it is very important for the company to make a big splash in the flash-based player market so as to enable it to have a good holiday season.
Beta News says the flash based players will measure 3-inches by 1.25-inches and will be similar in appearance to iPod nanos. The new flash-based Zunes are due to hit the market in November this year. The pricing structure of the new devices is not clear as of now.
