Why don't you go Google yourself? It isn't a rude suggestion; it's what a growing number of us are doing not only to ourselves, but to our friends, co-workers and would-be suitors. The Pew Internet and American Life Project says 47 percent of U.S. adult Internet users have sought out information about themselves or someone else through Google or another search engine.
That's more than twice the percentage of users who did the same just five years ago. While the number is double, one researcher says she's surprised the growth rate isn't higher. Mary Madden says despite the increase, "there's a big chunk of Internet users who have never done this simple act" of checking themselves or someone else out through a search engine. About 60 percent of Internet users say they aren't worried about the extent of information about themselves online, despite increasing concern over how that data can be used.
